After a total of 17 years in the black and yellow jersey, Marcel Schmelzer ends his career. In 2005 the defensive man from 1. FC Magdeburg moved to BVB’s youth, where he became a professional in 2008.
During his time at Borussia, Schmelzer became German champion and three times cup winner twice. The ex-international played his last game in June 2020.
One who was on Schmelzer’s side almost all the time is Mats Hummels. No wonder that the central defender is close to saying goodbye.
“No player was by my side as long as you. So I have hardly learned a player like you,” Hummels pointed out emotional words to Schmelzer on Instagram.
Hardly any player was and was “still underestimated,” said the 33-year-old. “As a guy on and off the square, you are a dream for every teammate and trainer. Diligent, ambitious, modest, willing to learn, inquisitive, team -oriented, always and every second with full commitment,” Hummels described his valued colleague.
“Many people who don’t know what is important in football”
The BVB routiner continues: “Many people who do not know what is important in football if you want to win will never get what you have d1. We all who have experienced you every day know how to experience you again on the pitch again, but unfortunately your body no longer allowed it, just when you fought back impressively again! “
But even so Schmelzer will “get the farewell that you deserve so much,” assured Hummels, who ended the contribution with the words “nothing but love”.
